Filmmakers Talk: The State of Disability Filmmaking

Gábor Fábián
Festival Director, Director, Screenwriter
International Special Film Festival – Hungary
Since the early 2000s, Gábor Fábián has been dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in filmmaking in Hungary. He was the first to organize film festivals, workshops, and training programs focused on this topic.
What started as small regional events has now grown into an international film festival and a nationwide filmmaking community. His work has gained recognition and support from the Hungarian film industry, including the National Film Institute, which acknowledges that films created by people with disabilities have become an integral part of Hungarian film culture.
In Hungary, this genre is called “special filmmaking,” and films created by people with disabilities are referred to as “special films.” These films hold great value as they tell authentic stories, drawing directly from the creators' own experiences and ideas.
Through the initiative launched by Gábor, 10-15 professional film programs are now organized annually for people with disabilities. These include audience meet-and-greet events, film days, thematic screenings, panel discussions, conferences, professional courses, workshops, film showcases, and film festivals.
